The TS5050 is a multi function printer designed for home users, as an MFP it can print, scan and copy all from one handy peripheral. It also has a decent range of connectivity, supporting cloud printing via the likes of Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print.
It’s compact design is slightly unusual, perhaps looking more like a piece of audio kit, but rest assured it can do what it is built for! Overall the Canon has a small footprint so it’s a stand out choice if you are looking for something smaller to sit in your home office. The rounded corners and tapering contours help it to blend into the background without looking like a big bulky box.
Functionality
The TS5050 is an Inkjet printer aimed at the home market. This updated edition has a redesigned menu system with more intuitive buttons to help select options on the 3″ colour screen.
If you want to save the hassle of uploading photos from your camera it has an SD card reader that allows you to print direct from your camera’s storage. Or, if printing pictures taken from your phone, there are iOS and Android apps available that can send your pics to be printed over the air waves.
The rear paper tray is the standard affair but can store a satisfactory 100 sheets. The tray can be a little fiddly to close and wasn’t always detected first time. Also going against it, there is no automatic duplexing (the ability to print of both sides of the paper).
Print Quality
The Canon uses a five ink system, this includes two blacks, one for printing text and one more suited for photo output, giving superior contrast on the resultant images. The cartridges are separate which is handy for replacement, just swap out the one that’s empty saving you money in the long run.
Tests show the printer is able to output around 12 pages of standard text in a minute, which is an adequate performance for this type of printer. Switching to draft mode gives a lighter output, saving ink, but no improvement in speed. Print quality is reported to be excellent.
Scan times are reported to be good, with a detailed 1,200dpi image taking about a minute producing a decent quality scan with sharp focus and a high dynamic range. However an A4 photocopy took around 20 seconds which is on the slower side.

I cannot alter the paper size from A5 to A4. It sticks on A5 and when the response comes to make a change I cannot get past ‘Load the appropriate paper into the rear tray’ I have done that but it will not then shift from that wording on the screen. Help please

Hi, paper size is normally set by the printing application and not a function of the printer itself. Have you tried printing with different applications. I assume it is loaded with A4 correctly.
