Duplexing is quite simply printing on both sides of the piece of paper. There is clearly a big advantage in doing this, you get to use half the amount of paper than you would do if only printing on just the one side.
Half the paper means half the cost! So not only do you save yourself some money you are also saving a few trees from an untimely fate.
If you like the sound of that then you just need to look at printers that offer duplex as part of their specification. You should find it available on most professional, or business, printers but also some home consumer models will have this feature too.
Manual duplex versus Auto duplex
Watch out though, some printers only offer “manual” duplex functionality which is not so convenient in my opinion. It still works but it can be a time consuming and frustrating process. It works by printing the first side and then stopping and waiting for you to turn the sheet over to do the second side. Fine if you only have a few pages to do but not practical if you have hundreds!
Auto duplex printing ensures the whole thing is done automatically. This used to be expensive and out of the reach of home buyers but it is available on more and more printers these days and it doesn’t have to cost the earth.
Do you recommend Duplex Printers?
I’m a big fan of duplexing and I actually have it as a default on my printer. Every time I make a hardcopy I default to putting it onto both sides of the paper. Not always, don’t make the mistake of printing double sided when you intend to cut out the pictures you just printed. Yes – I have made that mistake before.
