Epson Expression Home XP-452 Review

The Epson Expression Home XP-452 is your typical low cost home printer.  You know the type, a low upfront cost for a basic printer and you know they will make their money back through the print cartridges over time.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but that means this model is suitable for basic home printing only and you might want to look elsewhere for a full on office printing experience.

Functionality

The Epson XP-452 uses individual colour ink cartridges which is always handy for keeping costs down as you only need to replace the colour that has run out.  It is also compatible with Epson’s ReadyInk scheme which allows you to sign up to receive new cartridges just when you need them.  The printer itself monitors the level of ink remaining and prompts you to order a new one  just in time.

Through WiFi direct you are able to connect and print from any compatible WiFi device without having to go through your home network.  Handy for guest printing or if your mobile phone isn’t connecting through a WiFi access point.  Another neat feature allows you to print out via email, so you can send an image to the printer from anywhere in the world and it will be waiting for you on your return (assuming it was left on standby!).

Print Quality

The Epson is able to pump out 33 pages per minute on black and white and a reasonable 15 in colour mode.  Not a bad effort really given this is a low end model.  Image quality is as expected from this end of the market, and can manage a respectable 5,760 x 1,440 DPI max resolution.

Printed text looked sharp and colour fills were reassuringly consistent. More expensive competitors will produce more vibrate images but if you’re looking for something to print the children’s homework this is going to meet that requirement. Whilst the initial purchase price is low, the cost of ink is going to add up, if you need large scale printing capabilities then a more economical printer such as the EcoTank might be worth looking into it.

Scanning is on the slow side, it can take over 30 seconds to scan a full A4 page at 300 dpi, although it does manage a faster preview. High resolution colour photos scans can take minutes to run.

We give the Epson Expression Home XP-452 a 4.5 out of 5 rating. Want to know what existing owners of this printer think? You can read real user reviews here.

I would recommend contacting Epson support site: https://www.epson.co.uk/support

If you do a “test print” you could confirm that the printer is working and the colour ink is setup OK. Printers often allow this independent of the computer. Else check under printer properties when you go to print, you should see a colour / black and white drop down.
